Interactive Autumn in the Waxhaws event for all ages

September 11, 2024

WAXHAW, NC – Explore Autumn in the Waxhaws on September 21, an event by the Museum of the Waxhaws to get local history of what life may have looked like in the 19th century.

In order to attend the event, attendees can purchase tickets on Eventbrite or at the gate the day of the event. The event is 10 am to 5 pm. The funds from the tickets are used for the upkeep of the building.

Megan Plyler, board of directors, discussed more about the event.

“The event is important to keep our history alive,” she said. “The Waxhaw region has a lot of Native American history dating back hundreds of years. The actual European settlers came over in the mid-1700s. In Union County, the Waxhaw settlement is the oldest European settlement in the county.”

Fun for everyone

Plyler said this event is geared towards families and individuals of all ages.

“We’re really pushing interactive living history, hands-on activities and crafts for kids,” she said.

There will be reading materials for adults and other exhibits. The event even includes living historians (volunteers) with interactive demonstrations as if they were in the 1800s.

“They are interactive in the sense where they want you to come talk to them as they do demonstrations like hearth cooking in the cabins,” she said.

For example, four historic buildings are onsite from the mid-1800s. The Secrest Cabin, Sims Barn, Nesbit Smokehouse, and a working blacksmith shop. All of these will be open on September 21 for attendees to experience.

The museum’s picnic area is a space to enjoy the food available.

The nonprofit museum was founded in 1988, but the building has been open since 1992. They have a board of directors (volunteers) and other volunteers from the Carolinas – yes, both South and North.

The museum is not funded by the state or town. For the upkeep of the building, they rely on events, field trips to the museums and donations.

Enjoy the event at 8215 Waxhaw Highway from 10 am to 5 pm.
